Lynx Dry Advert UNUGAR

Codes and Conventions: Media Form
in this advert there was different codes and conventions used, firstly there’s the technical aspect, this consist of the camera techniques and shots, the first shot we see is a long shot, when they show the young male walking and they then show a close up on his face when he notices the sand pile , it then moves onto a medium shot when they show the product, and now the audience are aware of what the product is and what is being advertised to them. The man then picks up the product, it then shows a POV shot of the product which can almost make the audience feel as if they are holding the products which could then influence them to go and buy the product. It then shows a medium shot of the man spraying himself with the lynx bottle, then immediately he gets pulled away and dragged by a rope, it shows the journey of him being dragged, during this journey it would leave the audience with question like why is he being dragged? Where is being dragged to? Etc. When they finally establish where he is being dragged to, they show 2 beautiful women on the waters, this could make the male men in the audience think that if they had this product then they could be dragged away by 2 beautiful women. Also the use of sound is used, some of the noises seem natural and some are added, this also related to the codes and conventions.

Representation
the setting of this advert is shown as a normal town/city and is represented as such. The actors on the other hand, the male is shown to be vulnerable to his surroundings. He is seen walking around alone with no one around him, he then picks up a random bottle of lynx and decides to spray himself, straight after he is being dragged like a fish out of water and there is nothing he can do about, this shows him as helpless and there is nothing he can do, the women are shown to be more dominant as they are ones dragging him towards them, this shows the women have more power over men, where as in real life men are seen to have more power, but this stereotype is broken in this advert.

Audience
one technique used is simply showing the product itself, once a male sees the lynx bottle he will automatically be draw into watching the add, well this really depends on what type of man it is, if its the sporty type then they will definitely be draw into the advert, where as a business man would not need a sports spray because his life does not involve sports. Another way is the actresses used, they show a young man, and beautiful women, if a lady was to see this add it could make them feel as if they could become more sexually attracted to their partners if they were to use this spray and men would think women are more attracted to them if they use it, so just by the characters used can help attract an audience.

Institution
the institution involved is uni-lever. They are a modern and contemporary establishment, the institution is new, which means their ideas are also new, being new allows them to be fresh and have strong ideas on what they want from their audience, their advertising techniques have made lynx a top brand in the advertisement industry.

the 4 questions for mr unugar

time was a issue for me! need practise wid time

Forms: how does the advert use codes and conventions to appeal to its audience?
This advert uses different codes and conventions to appeal to its audience, firstly we see a close up shot of the rolled up news paper, this is done so we can clearly see The Suns logo as it stands out, this lets us know what this advert it going to be about, the shot then zooms out as the news paper is unfolded so we can then see the whole newspaper in front of us. The background is all white, this again allows the newspaper to stand out, and there is nothing behind the paper that can make us take our eyes of it, and as the news paper is opened more colours begin to be shown, this again makes us keep attention to the paper as there is nothing else around worth seeing. Along with the white background,  helps make the newspaper look aluminous, and this is done by the light used, its simply one strong light and u don’t see now shadows, this could be because there are lights all around, or this advert was edited so the shadows could not be seen. The use of music is also involved, it’s a happy times music to enlighten mood, there is also a voice over, almost like a smooth voice that can pull someone in just to see what it’s about.
Representation: how is new technology represented in this advertisement?
In this advert technology almost seems like a joke, the way the voice over says things about the pictures being 3D when they are clearly not, he also says there is no need to wait for the download as the story is already written there. From my personal opinion I think they are trying to compare the news paper to an iPad, because they also say “there’s not need to turn it sideways to see it clearer”, so all round I think they are saying the technology from the iPad is represented as something like a joke, because a simple newspaper is better than it, it does a lot of comparison but does not clearly say what it is comparing it to, they say it has a screen, when the news paper is opened through the middle page, it mentions downloading, 3d pictures and anything else that could be compared to real life technology.
Media Institutions: what does the advertisement tell you about the values and ideologies of the sun newspaper?
The advertisement tells me the suns newspaper is represented by both dominant ideology and alternative ideology. The way it does this is because of the way it is appealing to both men and women, it shows football columns and also a column for women where they show a picture of Rihanna. I think it is more strongly on the dominant ideology side, because it shows a white males hands, and they do not look wrinkly which means he is not old and they do not look like children’s arms so he is not young, he is middle aged. And the way he moves his arms shows that he is able bodied.
Audience: how does the advertisement appeal to its audience?
This advert appeals to its audience in many different ways; it does not seem there is a certain age group it is aimed at because firstly the music being played is almost like kids music, so it could then be aimed at kids, but you would not find kids reading a news paper. It could also be aimed at older males because of the football pages they show, as you would not get women on the football sides, but they do have a section for older women, i think its the fashion side where they show a picture of Rihanna wearing weird cloths. Also at the back they have games, but the types of games that are not for kids, they are harder puzzles which clearly shows they are for older people, this also helps appeal to its audience because they could be out and being these games to keep them busy, another way it appeals is by choice of pictures, some people just like to see pictures and not read the whole story, but if the pictures seem good then the people might read the story with it, so the pictures are also appealing to their audience.

Media Forms: How does the trailer use media language to estabilsh the film's genre?

The way this trailer uses media language to establish the genre is by using media language. The first thing we see is a long shot or the huge billboards in central London so we can see this is set in London. We then see a medium shot of a girl sitting by a stair well holding a cup, almost like what a beggar would do when they ask people for spare change, this could tell us the trailer is about a homeless or poor girl, but then it goes on to a voice saying “your a run away are ya?” and another voice replies with “yeah”. This then lets us know there could be a touch of the disaster genre because the girl runs away from home because there could possibly be a disaster within her family. The use of the non Diegetic sound of the piano could also help to establish the genre because the use of the piano adds to the tension being built around why this girl is a run away, also the way the music is being played slow also helps build tension. We then see the run away girl with a man in a cafe and he hands her money, this leaves the audience with questions as to why this man has given her the money or where the money has come from. The text on screen that shows what each news paper has said about it could also help establish the genre of the film, also by adding what each news paper has said about it, can encourage people to watch this film because of the text that has appeared on the screen. At the end of the trailer we then see the name of the film again with the use of non Diegetic sounds of a gun being fired, which could then link back to he mystery genre.

Media Representations: How is gender represented in the trailer?

In the trailer men are shown to be very dominant as they are seen to have more power over the women, and the women are seen to be very negative because of the situations they get them selves into. The men are seen to hold all the power because we see one of them men with a lot of money and another man in a huge house which looks quite sophisticated which could also tell us he is rich with a lot of money, the women are seen to be doing degrading, I’m not sure what they get into but when one of the women goes of with the man, the other women chases after her and they are then seen crying, also by the man leading her away also shows his dominance. Later on in the trailer the men are once again shown to have the power above the women because the man is seen with a gun and he is shown pointing it towards the women and they are scared, which then again shows the dominance and power he has over them. The way each person in the trailer is dressed also shows the way gender is represented because one of the men are shown in a white suit, and the girls are in ripped jeans and dirty hoods. Also at the beginning we the women alone by a stair well at night time, this could give the impression that she is vulnerable to any thing and this also shows negativity of women because of the way she has chose to live her life.

Media Institutions: In what ways is the film London to Brighton typical of a low budget British film?

Well we can firstly see the actors that are used are not celebrities or any one famous, they could simply be people picked out from a group who were asked to do these roles as the film does not have enough money to get famous people, and if there is no famous people in the movie people are less likely to watch it. Also it seems as this whole film was recorded on the streets of London which means there was no special sets set up for them, and also they do not show any expensive looking props or cars or anything in that manner. Every thing used in the trailer are easy to get a hold of for ay one, where as in an expensive trailer they have expensive cars like a Ferrari or rolls Royce. We can also see this trailer was put together using a simple editor; there is no CGI being used or no signs of any ting high-tech with in the trailer. The director of this film would have also been unknown as low budget films are seen to be less likely to become successful, so no body is willing to invest into the movie.

Media Audiences: In what ways does the trailer promote the film to its target audience?

This trailer promote to its audience in different ways, the first way is the main character is seen to be young, almost looks as if she is in her teens, and i think this trailer is aimed to wards teenagers, and also that we know she runs away, and it is shown that many teens run away from home for many different reason, so these people can relate to her in the movie, also the use of violence as most teens like a bit of violence in there movies, i personally like movies that have fighting or violence because it just gives the sense of pleasure because i enjoy it.
