12B - Trailer Analysis HW (WIGLEY)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfapOIPCRik

Within this trailer there are different trailer conventions present, one of these is the title of the film, and it is seen at the end of the trailer, the reason they have done this is because once some one beings to watch the trailer they would have to sit through the whole trailer to find out its name. The name of the trailer is ‘Shank’, “Shank” is a name for a knife but the word is used more around anti social youths or gangs, and as in the trailer a knife is shown quite a lot but it does not show what it is used for, this would also make the audience wonder if the knife had been used or not and the only way to find out would be to watch the movie. Another convention used is the voice herd at the beginning, the persons voice you would hear is ‘Bashy’s’. Bashy is famously known for his inspirational work he does on different estates for troubled youth and gangs which means more people can relate to him, by hearing his voice the people who like him automatically become the audience of this movie because they want to see him and what he does in the movie, another convention used is the on screen text, right at the beginning it says “from the distributor that bought you kidulthood” and as almost every teenager would know, Kidulthood was one of the greatest movies ever produced, well only for the ones that can relate to the people in the movie, and by showing that on shank it could make those teens feel as if this is another movie for them so they would go and watch it.

This trailer uses different media language to establish the films genre, we first notice how there is a boy getting chased and from behind him we hear a motor cycle, this strait away gives the impression he had done something bad to be getting chased in such a way, a few clips later we then see the same boy and an older boy in a boxing ring who seem like their preparing for a fight. Being chased and preparing for a fight lets the audience know once again there could be violence involved, then to top that we then see the 2 boys with around 4-5 more boys, one which is seen to be holding a dog and the one behind him is holding a metal pipe, and they seem as if they are going to a fight. They use a lot of short clips and put them together so they move fast, this helps to create tension, then we see writing that says “London 2015” which lets us know this movie is based in the future and then hear “there killing kids everywhere, its out of control”. This lets people know the genre and where the movie is heading, what is in the movie and what is expected.

The target audience is 15+ because there is violence involved as we can see from the trailer; it is aimed mostly at people in gangs and who like to get them selves into bad situations. This movie shows the outcomes of being in gangs and being in bad situations, you could say it is aimed at African Americans because there are a lot of those peoples shown in the movie, and I’m sure it’s safe to say more of those people then any one can relate to that movie.

I think this trailer is quite successful in promoting this movie because it shows a person what can happen if they fall into same situations as the people in the movie, they show more then one race so no one can feel singled out and it also cleverly disguises the use drugs and turns them into food. This trailer also shows good bits of the movies that would want to make an audience go and see it, so overall i think it is an effective trailer.

GHD Textual Analayis Questions (VAN)

Codes & Conventions of advertising:
the first thing i noticed in this advert was the womens being used, they are all young attractive women, this would not only attract female customers but also males, the males customers would want their girlfriend/wifes to look like these women so they would go out and purchase the GHD for them. also the voice you hear uses old shake spear type of language, instead of saying "you" they say "thou" which is strongly used in the 10 commandments and the 10 commandments is what certain people must follow, and if it used with the GHD then it means that certain people must have this GHD. The hair that is also shown is pretty impressive, and any girl/women would want to have hair like that, i have personally seen a lot of different girls buy so many different hair straighteners trying to find the one that perfectly straitens their hair, but with the GHD its also most like a dream straightener that does the job perfectly, so more people would want it. Also a male is seen in this advert, to males who like males may find the male in the advert attractive, and if they have long hair they may wants this straightener so they can be like the male in the advert and maybe get a partner as attractive as the womens shown.

Representation:
in this advert women are seen to be more dominant, we would usually see men are more dominant as they fight each other but in this one we see the two women fighting because one has been caught using the other ones GHD. only one male is seen in this advert and he is not seen as much, but with the voice we hear we know he is cheating on his girlfriend with another girl, which does not give males a good reputation, but through this they are saying if women use the GHDs they can get any man. which would also mean women are shown to be seductive as they make this man fall for them.

Media Institution:
an issue that could be raised is the fact that this add had to tried to manipulate the 10 commandments, and a certain group of people could become offended by that and say the GHD add is mocking their beliefs. The Catholic people are the ones who would be offended, and Catholics are very strict with what they believe in, in the add the women are shown to be quite revealing with what they wear, this would insult the Catholics a lot as they are taught to be covered up in all aspects. this advert was on the E4 channel, E4 is a channel mainly for adult, you would not find many children watching it as all the shows on the channel would only be suitable for adults. As catholics are strict the people behind the advert thought they would not watch channels such as E4 so it would be ok to let it be advertised on that channel and no one would notice and they would get away with it.

Audience:
i honestly believe the add is aimed to wards men, because of the attractive women, the men would want their girl friends to look like the girls in the add so they would go out and buy it for them. but at the same time it could target women who would want to look like these girls shown and would want to have their hair as straight as them.

12B Cover Work Thurs 2nd & Friday Dec 3rd (VAN)

What techniques does this trailer use to persuade an audience to see the film?
This trailer uses lots of techniques to persuade the audience to watch the film. The use of Diegetic sounds helps build suspense and leave the audience with questions and they would want to know what happens next and the only way to get these answers is to see the film. They make the trailer intense by using a lot of short takes and making them move at a fast pace and also the music with it helps builds the tension. The music gradually gets louder as the more interesting parts begin to show in the trailer. They show beginning of fight scenes then change the screen so we do knot know what has happened, and the only way to know is to see the film.

How is gender represented in this trailer?
Males are represented dominant; as this trailer is mostly about fighting, and males are known to be more dominant in fights. Females are shown to be weaker, as the girl is shown to stupid things for the man she loves. Although there is a woman who looks as if she is ready to fight so they could say women could be seen both ways, but the males are shown to just fight.

What target audience would be attracted to this film?
The target audience would be aged between 12-19 years old and BC1C2 socio-economic group; who has an interest in fantasy films. I believe girls would be more attracted to it, as being a male i would not want to see romance in a violent film, and girls are more about their romance. Also the characters look to be in their teens, this could make the viewers feel as if they have a connection with them.

What Hollywood values can you identify in this trailer?
I think Violence is the Hollywood value used in this trailer, because you can see from the beginning, an evil man killing another evil man. Once i saw this i knew straight away there would more violence, because in every movie, there is always the typical revenge plot.
